Senior Matrimonial Lawyer

Job Description

Our client is looking for an additional Senior Matrimonial Lawyer, specialised in family law, particularly in matters related to divorce, separation, child custody, and financial settlements, to join their team in either their Nelson Head Office or their new Salford office.


This role requires extensive experience in handling complex matrimonial cases, providing legal advice, and representing clients in court.


The work environment typically involves a combination of office-based tasks and court appearances. Some travel may be required for client meetings and court hearings. The role demands a high level of dedication and often involves working beyond standard business hours to meet client needs and case deadlines.


Key Responsibilities

  • Client Consultation: Conduct initial consultations with clients to understand their needs, offer legal advice, and outline possible outcomes.
  • Case Management: Manage a caseload of matrimonial matters from inception to resolution, ensuring timely and efficient progression.
  • Legal Research: Perform thorough legal research to support case strategies and stay updated on changes in family law legislation.
  • Documentation: Draft accurate legal documents to progress clients cases.
  • Representation: Represent clients in court hearings, mediations, and negotiations, advocating for their best interests.
  • Negotiation: Negotiate settlements on behalf of clients, aiming for amicable resolutions while protecting their rights.
  • Advisory Role: Provide expert advice on matrimonial law issues such as asset division, spousal maintenance, and child support.
  • Supervision: Train and supervise more junior members of staff within the team.
  • Collaboration: Work collaboratively with other legal professionals, including barristers and solicitors, to achieve the best outcomes for clients.
  • Client Support: Offer emotional support and guidance to clients during the challenging times of marital breakdowns.
  • Finances: Oversee the department’s financial performance, including budgeting and profitability.
  • Compliance: Ensure all activities comply with the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) guidelines and ethical standards.


Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Experience: A minimum of 5 years of experience in family law, with a proven track record in handling complex matrimonial cases.
  • Legal Expertise: In-depth knowledge of matrimonial law and family law practices in England.
  • Education: A degree in law with additional qualifications in family law preferred.
  • Licensing: Admission to the roll of solicitors in England and Wales and compliance with ongoing continuing professional development (CPD) requirements.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex legal concepts clearly.
  • Negotiation Skills: Strong negotiation skills to mediate and resolve conflicts effectively.
  • Analytical Skills: Superior analytical and problem-solving skills to devise effective legal strategies.
  • Empathy: Compassionate and patient approach, understanding the emotional dynamics of family disputes.
  • Attention to Detail: Precision in drafting legal documents and managing case files.
  • Time Management: Ability to manage multiple cases efficiently and meet deadlines.
  • Professionalism: Uphold the highest standards of professionalism and integrity in all dealings.
